Botulinum Toxin

100_unit_vial_lgBotulinum Toxins weaken muscle for about 3 months and may be used to:

    • Soften the appearance of wrinkles
    • Reduce the bulk of a muscle, such as the jaw muscle, and alter the contour of the face
    • Change the shape of the eyes, nose, mouth, or chin
    • Stop sweating
    • Diminish headaches

Many studies have shown Xeomin® and Botox® be equivalent in potency and duration of action.

The effects may be seen as soon as 3 days after treatment, but may take up to 3 weeks for the full effect.  After treatment, avoid exercise or laying down for 4 hours to minimize the risk of spreading the medication to other muscles.  An undesirable cosmetic outcome can usually be easily corrected.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes the frown lines and wrinkles?
Frown lines and wrinkles are caused by contraction of the underlining muscle. Weakening the muscle with botulinum toxin will relax the wrinkles.

Is there anything I need to tell you before I have the procedure done?
We provide a full consultation prior to treatment. Pregnancy, breast feeding, and some rare diseases like ALS, Myasthenia Gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome should be brought to our attention immediately.

Will my face be frozen?
Only if you want it to be.  As part of the consultation, we discuss your desired outcome.  If you want to be frozen, we can do that.  If you want to maintain expression but reduce wrinkles, we can do that as well.

Do the injections hurt?
The small pinch is generally very well tolerated.  For many sites, we can use a topical spray to numb the skin.  In general my patients report that there was little or no discomfort involved.

What is the cost of Botox® or Xeomin®
The cost of these products is based on the amount used.  Depending on your face, the bulk of muscle present, and the area to be treated, varying amounts will be required.  Price ranges are available on the Prices page.

When will I start to see a difference?
The medication takes about 3 days to start working, and peak effect is seen at 3 weeks.

How long will my results last and when should I treat again?
Your results should last at least 3 months.  After 3 months, the nerves reconnect with the muscles and the strength will return.  To minimize the amount of toxin needed to re-treat, I recommend scheduling follow-up at 3 months.

Are there many side-effects?
Side effects associated with Botox® and Xeomin® may include localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness and bruising. Many of these side effects are due to injection technique and others from the medication itself.  The toxin may also spread beyond the muscle it was injected into, causing weakness elsewhere.  This is not common with the small doses used for wrinkles, but may include difficulty swallowing or speaking.  To reduce the risk of side effects, you should avoid alcohol the day of the injection, and not lay down or exercise for 4 hours after the injection.

What should I do after the procedure?
You may return to your usual activities with the following exceptions: 1) No laying down or exercising for 4 hours after treatment, 2) No facial or vigorous face washing for 24 hours

What happens if I get a droopy eyelid?
An eyelid droop may happen if the toxin spreads to a different muscle.  This can be treated with eyedrops to activate this muscle until the toxin wears off (3 months).
